Vet Hospital Lends An Emotional Hand

Stories were told and tears were shed on Saturday, January 9 at the Newburgh Veterinary Hospital where dozens of pet owners gathered to mourn the loss of their animals this past year. The annual memorial service, a tradition begun last year, is not only a place for pet owners to celebrate the lives of their animals, but is a way for the Newburgh Veterinary Hospital to show its support towards its patients and their loving owners.

"We came up with the idea for the memorial service last winter," said Dr. Victor Dasaro. "We spend a lot of time with these pets at the end of their lives and develop a relationship with them and their owners, but after the loss there is a drop off. We feel that the memorial service offers better closure."

The service began with a video montage of dogs and cats that had recently passed away, followed by readings and poems from the members of the staff. A tree was decorated with pictures of every pet that has passed hanging from its branches. The crowded room of owners began sharing stories of their loved ones while trying to hold back tears.

Deborah Reilly-Brocklehurst shared a story about her black cocker spaniel, Logan. Logan passed away just last week at age 15 and was a very important part of the family. At age 21, Deborah lost her mother, and when she needed someone to turn to, her animals were always there. Before Logan, her dog Sable was put down tragically at age three. Having been through many traumatic experiences, Logan, like many of the other pets that were being celebrated, was a friend that was always there. But happiness is not lost for Deborah, who brought along a new member of her family to the memorial. Holding a four-month-old kitten in her arms, Stella is the newest edition to the family.

Many of the pets that these owners adopt are strays, animals that need time, attention and love. While the veterinary hospital works hard on caring for the animals of the community, these owners are also very responsible for saving the lives of animals.

The staff at Newburgh Veterinary Hospital cares about its patients, and received much gratitude from everyone at the service. But instead of making the memorial a sad occasion, Dr.Dasaro and his staff tried to create a positive atmosphere. "We look at this as a celebration of their lives, not as a memorial, " said staff member Dora Cast.

One cause for celebration was the generous donation that was made by Dr.Dasaro on behalf of the Newburgh Veterinary Hospital. A gift of $5,000 was made to Jake's Fund, which assists needy animals in the community.

The staff of the Newburgh Veterinary Hospital plans to host the service every year, and Dr.Dasaro believes that it has been, and will continue to be successful. "This is our way of expressing our gratitude with our relationship with these people," explained Dr.Dasaro. "These are not just our patients, they are family."
